Some, maybe many, of you may have heard about the boycott of Amazon that's happening right now. Some of you may even be doing it. I urge you to think about the repercussions of this act. While many believe that Jeff Bezos still owns Amazon, the truth is he only owns about 9% of the company now. Most of it is owned by shareholders around the globe. Many believe that boycotting Amazon will somehow hurt him, but it won't. It won't even hurt the shareholders much. Then there are those who are angry that Amazon changed it's policy that had made it easier for our books to be pirated. What policy you might ask? They allowed customers to download digital content that they didn't own. You see, that $3.99 e-Book you purchased, you didn't buy the book. You bought the license to VIEW the book. It is like this at all e-retailers and with all digital content, be it books, music, movies, or video games, unless the license specifically states otherwise. By allowing customers to download the content so they could then make copies of it on other devices, they were essentially committing copyright infringement and allowing the customer to do so as well. They also made it easy for pirates to steal copyrighted material. That said, the truth is, the majority of Amazon's revenue comes from Amazon Web Services, not their storefront. Entities that utilize AWS include Meta (Facebook/Instagram), TikTok, Netflix, Reddit, and even some government websites. This is not an exhaustive list of entities who use AWS services. What this means is that, even if the storefront were to disappear today, and never return, the corporation would barely notice it. The ones who WOULD notice it? The over one million Indie authors who use Amazon to sell their books, along with the who-knows-how-many third party sellers on Amazon. Many of these Indie authors depend on the money they get from their sales to provide for their families, and many of them are already suffering from this boycott. Every day I am seeing posts on my Facebook feed that hurt y heart. Posts from authors who are scared they won't be able to pay their rent in two months (Amazon pays out the royalties 60 days after the month they are accrued) because their sales have flat-lined. Authors who are starting to think maybe it's time to hang up the pen, give up the dream, and go back to the daily grind they just got away from. Series and characters we've come to love may not get their happy endings because the authors are giving up. They think, why keep writing if the readers are going to punish them by not buying their books? Just some food for thought on this late Tuesday evening!
